SAN MATEO, CA, January 13, 2004
Tropos Networks, Inc., the leading supplier of systems used
to build metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced the appointment
of networking industry veteran Ron Sege as the company’s
President and Chief Executive Officer. Sege, most recently the
CEO of Ellacoya Networks, brings 20 years of experience managing
high-growth businesses in the networking market. His arrival
highlights Tropos Networks’ leadership in the rapidly
developing metro-scale Wi-Fi market. |

to build on Tropos Networks’ success in deploying metro-scale
outdoor Wi-Fi networks for public safety and service providers,”

Tropos products deliver metro-scale mobile
broadband access via a scalable, reliable and secure Wi-Fi infrastructure.
The heart of the Tropos solution is a new class of product called
a Wi-Fi cell, which layers unique intelligence on top of the
802.11 standard. Wi-Fi cells form an intelligent, self-organizing,
self-healing, and truly wireless broadband data network that
forwards data through the mesh along the optimal path to a wired
network. The result is a high capacity Wi-Fi deployment that
doesn’t require costly wired backhaul to each access point.
A Tropos system can be deployed at a multi-square-mile scale
to quickly, easily and securely bring wireless broadband to
environments that previously could only be served by low-bandwidth
cellular data services. |

Prior to joining Tropos Networks, Sege was
CEO of Ellacoya Networks, which develops intelligent bandwidth
management products for broadband access providers. At Ellacoya,
Mr. Sege oversaw the successful repositioning of the company
from the CLEC market segment to the incumbent carrier space,
garnering carrier customers and partners in the Americas, Asia
and Europe. As a result, Ellacoya raised $14 million in venture
funding during the toughest fund-raising environment in memory.
The company was recognized with Network Outlook’s Investor’s
Choice Award in 2001 and 2003. Mr. Sege was named a Mass High
Tech All Star and an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Finalist. |

Before Ellacoya, Mr. Sege served as President
of U.S. Operations for Terra Lycos. There, he was responsible
for generating significant traffic growth and consolidating
a series of acquisitions into the Lycos Network. Prior to Lycos,
Sege spent 10 years at 3Com, most recently as Senior Vice President
of the Systems Business Unit within the $6 billion revenue company.
Sege led the transition from point products to integrated customer
solutions, resulting in a 10-fold growth in revenue and securing
3Com's position as a market leader in enterprise networking.
He successfully integrated nine acquisitions, helping grow the
company dramatically in an extremely competitive industry. |

Sege holds a bachelors degree from Pomona
College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. |
