SUNNYVALE, CA, September 28, 2004
Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build
metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced a new high performance,
high powered and flexible mobile Wi-Fi cell, the Tropos 4210
for in-vehicle deployment. The new product allows municipalities
unprecedented flexibility in deploying wireless networks that
serve public safety vehicles and allows them to easily extend
tactical networks into uncovered areas on a temporary basis.
These new capabilities leverage Tropos Networks’ world-class
radio technology, the Tropos Sphere Network Operating System
(NOS) and build on the industry’s most extensive metro-scale
Wi-Fi deployment. |
|
 |
| |
“The Tropos 4210 mobile Wi-Fi cell
was an attractive option for us when planning our complete public
safety network overhaul,” said Kerry Wagnon, Project Director
for Oklahoma City. “The attractive economics, flexibility
and network mobility that the Tropos 4210 brings to the Tropos
Wi-Fi cell system were key reasons why we chose Tropos to build
the foundation of our city’s broadband wireless network.” |
|
 |
| |
“The Tropos 4210 mobile Wi-Fi cell
further establishes Tropos Networks as the industry standard
for metro-scale Wi-Fi, with the best network flexibility and
extensibility, as well as the lowest total cost of ownership,”
said Bert Williams, VP Marketing of Tropos Networks. “Additionally,
the new hardware features of the Tropos 4210 mobile Wi-Fi cell
further enhance Tropos’ already unrivaled network mobility
using standard Wi-Fi.”
|
|
 |
| |
The Tropos 4210 is based on the same world-class
radio technology as the industry-leading Tropos 5110 and incorporates
the patented Tropos Sphere NOS with the patented Predictive
Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP). The Tropos 4210 delivers numerous
benefits to municipal government users including: |
|
 |
| |
|
Best-of-breed in-vehicle
coverage without increasing fixed node density: The Tropos
4210 transmits at the maximum FCC allowable EIRP of 36
dBm, overcoming the transmission power limitations of
most Wi-Fi clients (which typically transmit at 20 dBm
or less). Industry-standard Wi-Fi clients in- and near-vehicle
are connected to the fixed infrastructure via the Tropos
4210, effectively boosting their range. The Tropos 4210
can also connect to the in-vehicle laptop or data terminal
using a standard RJ-45 Ethernet port. |
 |
|
Enhanced mobility for in-vehicle use:
While unlimited mobility with any standard Wi-Fi client
has always been a feature of Tropos metro-scale deployments,
the Tropos 4210 mobile Wi-Fi cell creates an incredibly
high performance and predictable roaming environment for
vehicular data. The in-vehicle laptop client always associates
with (or is hard-wired to) the vehicle’s Tropos
4210. Because the Tropos 4210 fully participates in Tropos
PWRP, it always connects to the Wi-Fi cell that offers
the best-performing path to a wired gateway. The Tropos
4210 also provides optional integrated GPS transceiver
functionality. |
 |
 |
Mobile coverage area: The Tropos 4210
creates a large, client-serving coverage area around the
vehicle, providing secure broadband connectivity for Wi-Fi
enabled laptops and PDAs. This creates mobile tactical
or incident networks where mission-critical data is shared
among public safety officers. The high-power Tropos 4210
transmits client traffic through difficult RF environments
to provide a robust connection to the fixed mesh network. |
 |
 |
Wi-Fi network extension: The Tropos
4210 can extend a metro-scale Wi-Fi network into remote
areas, providing coverage to an incident site beyond the
range of the fixed network or in the event that the fixed
infrastructure has been damaged in a disaster. Tropos
4210s will form a mesh to which clients in the area can
connect. The mesh of Tropos 4210s can be extended to meet
the boundary of the fixed metro-scale Wi-Fi network, providing
access to all of the resources available via the fixed
metro-scale Wi-Fi network. |
|
|
 |
| |
The Tropos Wi-Fi cell system is composed
of the Tropos 5110 outdoor, Tropos 4210 mobile and Tropos 3110
indoor Wi-Fi cells. All Tropos Wi-Fi cells, including the Tropos
4210, run the Tropos Sphere embedded NOS with PWRP and can be
managed using Tropos Control, the industry’s first purpose-built
element manager for metro-scale Wi-Fi networks. PWRP routes
traffic wirelessly, effectively eliminating up to 95% of the
wired backhaul requirements associated with traditional access
point, or hotspot, solutions. This intelligent routing negates
effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, backhaul failure,
and traffic loads by selecting the best performing route to
a backhaul connection. |
|
 |
| |
In an advanced metro-scale Wi-Fi public safety
network, the fixed outdoor infrastructure uses Tropos 5110 Wi-Fi
cells deployed on available fixed mounting assets, most typically
streetlights. The mobile infrastructure is composed of Tropos
4210 Wi-Fi cells installed in-vehicle, most typically the trunk
of a police cruiser or the cab of a fire engine. All of the
flavors of Tropos Wi-Fi cells communicate to form a robust wireless
mesh, dynamically routing end-user traffic back to the wired
gateway. |
|
 |
| |
Tropos Networks will begin shipping the Tropos
4210 mobile Wi-Fi cell in early 2005. |
