PHILADELPHIA EXPANDS FREE PUBLIC NETWORK WITH TROPOS METRO-SCALE WI-FI

City of Brotherly Love partners with Tropos Networks and Syndeo Communications to offer free Wi-Fi Internet access at marquis city landmarks

  PHILADELPHIA, PA, September 28, 2004
Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced that the City of Philadelphia is further expanding its free Internet access metro-scale Wi-Fi network to cover some of the city’s most famous landmarks. Using the Tropos Wi-Fi System, the network is already operational in and around Love Park, and has recently been made available to residents and visitors within an increased Wi-Fi footprint.

Tying into the existing Love Park coverage zone, the network is now accessible continuing down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the area around the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a city institution made famous worldwide by an unforgettable scene in the movie “Rocky.” Users are able to access email, the Internet, and their corporate VPNs from anywhere in the coverage zone, including the famous museum steps.
“The residents of Philadelphia take great pride in our community and want to further foster and grow community communications and connectivity,” said Philadelphia CIO Dianah Neff. “We are very pleased with the performance, low cost and ease-of use of our Tropos metro-scale Wi-Fi equipment and with the public response to this great service.”

The City of Philadelphia selected Syndeo Communications of Lafayette, Louisiana, to help with the planning and installation of the metro-scale Wi-Fi network. Because of the incredible simplicity of the Tropos design, the network was quick and easy to install, and large areas were completely unwired in a matter of hours.
The Philadelphia Wi-Fi network utilizes Tropos 5110 Wi-Fi cells, an outdoor-optimized and ruggedized wireless mesh router based on the 802.11 standard. The Tropos 5110 quickly and economically uses the intelligent Tropos Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage over metro areas. The Tropos PWRP routes traffic wirelessly, eliminating up to 95% of the wired backhaul associated with traditional access point solutions. Tropos Wi-Fi cells form a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired backhaul failure and node failure. PWRP also scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. Network support costs are minimized via the central management capabilities of the Tropos Control Element Manager, a configuration, monitoring and maintenance tool.
Philadelphia is the latest in a rapidly growing group of municipalities to deploy metro-scale Wi-Fi from Tropos Networks. Tropos Wi-Fi mesh networking systems are used for a variety of public Internet access and mission critical applications including public safety; database access; residential, business and mobile user internet access; video surveillance and automated meter reading, to name a few.
