NTT COMMUNICATIONS SELECTS TROPOS NETWORKS FOR UNWIRING MILITARY BASES, CITIES AND RURAL AREAS OF JAPAN

Tropos Metro-Scale Wi-Fi Mesh Solution Chosen After Successful Trial in Tokyo

SUNNYVALE, CA - March 9, 2005 -- Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networks, today announced that its family of MetroMesh routers and management software is now available in Japan through Sumitomo Densetsu. Tropos and Sumitomo Densetsu, working with VR Techno Center, scored their first successes in Shirakawa Village and Flower Festival Commemorative Park, both located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
NTT Com identified Wi-Fi mesh technology as a key technology because of its potential to provide a fast, cost-effective communications infrastructure that is easy to deploy, expand and operate. NTT Com recently conducted a field trial in Tokyo using Tropos MetroMesh routers and the Tropos Control element manager. Tropos was selected for use in the Iwakuni Air Station network based on successfully completing the trial.
"We are very pleased with the performance of the Tropos MetroMesh technology, even under difficult conditions in Tokyo," said Mr. Satoshi Baba, Director, Ubiquitous Service Department of NTT Com. "Iwakuni Air Base is the first of what we expect will be many commercial deployments, including other military bases, cities and rural parts of Japan."
"We are delighted to have NTT Com as a partner for metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh in Japan," said Mr. Ron Sege, president and CEO of Tropos. "Japan is both a broadband society and a very mobile one, so we expect it to be a great market for mobile wireless broadband."
Because Iwakuni Air Station is a U.S. base in Japan, traditional telecommunications infrastructure such as DSL and fiber-to-the-home services are not available. To most quickly and cost-effectively address this situation, NTT Com chose a metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network to provide broadband Internet service. The Wi-Fi mesh network will offer 1+ Mbps performance throughout the base, not only inside buildings but also in the outdoor areas. The deployment is scheduled go live in the third quarter of 2005.
During the trial and while planning the Iwakuni installation, NTT Com worked closely with Nissho Electronics, one of Japan's leading distributors of IT products and services.
The Iwakuni Air Station Wi-Fi network will use Tropos Networks' outdoor-optimized MetroMesh routers. Tropos MetroMesh routers quickly and economically use the intelligent Tropos Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage over metro areas. PWRP forms a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired backhaul failure and mesh router failure. PWRP scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. Network support costs are minimized via the central management capabilities of the Tropos Control element manager, a configuration, monitoring and maintenance tool.
