Tropos Offers First 802.11n Based Outdoor Wireless Broadband Routers in Europe

New Products Comply With Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) Standards V1.4.1 and Draft V1.5.1

Sunnyvale, CA – May 7, 2009 – Tropos Networks, the market leader in outdoor wireless broadband networks announced immediate availability in Europe of its new line of high performance 802.11n compatible routers announced last month .  The Tropos Outdoor Mesh Routers, models 6310, 6320 and 7320, combine the powerful capabilities of the 802.11n draft standard, custom-built outdoor-optimized radios and the patented Tropos Mesh OS to deliver the highest performance available.  These routers are fully interoperable with Tropos’ existing line of fixed and mobile mesh routers, used worldwide by cities and utilities to build greener, safer, smarter communities.

With this announcement, Tropos becomes the first vendor to offer outdoor wireless 802.11n-based routers in Europe that have been tested for compliance with ETSI EN301 893 V 1.4.1 and draft V1.5.1 standards for radar detection and interference avoidance.  While ETSI requires shipment of all wireless routers to Europe after April 1, 2009 to comply with V1.4.1, Tropos chose to implement both V1.4.1 and draft V1.5.1 in the new products to provide customers with a more future-proof solution.

The DFS standard specifies hardware and software features for wireless routers to ensure such products can coexist with military and weather radar deployments without creating disruptions to such signals on 5 GHz channels (specifically in the 5.470 – 5.725 GHz range).  When such a radar signal is detected, Tropos utilizes its patented Smart Channel software to quickly change channels without packet loss.  In addition, Tropos supports fallback capabilities onto the 2.4 GHz band onto which traffic can be diverted in the absence of any usable 5 GHz channel.  With each subsequent version of the DFS standard, the requirements become increasingly stringent for vendors to meet while providing increased security for military and weather radar users.
